3 Tips To Stay Motivated On Your Frugal Journey

Hello Friend! If you clicked this title, I bet you’re feeling burnt out with being frugal right now. A little frustrated, a little overwhelmed, and a lot tired with it all. I have been there many times since I started my frugal living journey 14 years ago. And I’m here to tell you that IT’S OKAY TO FEEL BURNT OUT!

But…

 GUESS WHAT?!

I have some hacks that will help you! Keep reading–I promise to keep it short and sweet. Check out the bottom of this post for a fun FREE opportunity as well!

TIP 1 – TAKE A BREAK

That’s right. It is okay to take a short break during your frugal living journey. This is a JOURNEY, and like all journeys, it sometimes needs a detour. Now, don’t get me wrong here. I’m not telling you it’s okay to go and spend your entire life savings on a total home redecorating session, or to go buy a top of the line brand new vehicle for fun and take on payments. But I am telling you that if you’re in a season of life that is exhausting, and washing 7 loads of dishes every day is just too much, go buy the paper plates! I promise, it is okay to buy some paper plates for a while if it makes your life that much easier.

Our lives have seasons–seasons of toddlers, seasons of teenagers, seasons of little sleep, and seasons of a little time alone. Just like our lives, our frugal living journey also has seasons. Embrace the season you are in, and be as frugal as you can, while also giving yourself grace.

TIP 2 – USE VISUALS

Writing down your goals is a wonderful thing to do to stay motivated on your frugal living journey! Folding up that paper and putting it away until you check in on those goals in 6 months is not such a great idea. Take the goals you wrote down at the beginning of the year, find photos that represent that goal, and write 1-3 words to describe the goal under the photo. Then, make some copies to tape around the house or in your vehicle–anywhere you might need a reminder of the goal!

I created mine for 2022 (you can see it just above this paragraph!). Then I printed it in several sizes and taped it around the house. I have one in my vehicle, one taped to the outside of my laptop, and a small one taped inside my wallet. I’m a born shopper, and having the quick visual helps me to weigh my potential purchase against my long-term goals and make a good decision.

PS– Guess what else it has done!! My kids now see our goals and have gotten really excited to find out where we are with the goals and how they can help (we say by not always asking to eat out!). I will have a whole dedicated post on money, frugality, and kids later–sign up for my email list to get notified when it posts!

TIP 3 – FIND YOUR COMMUNITY

If you are trying to be frugal all on your own, it can get very overwhelming and boring. Talk with a friend who is, or wants to become, frugal like you. Decide on one new frugal practice each month. That is only 12 for the whole year! Then, check in with each other a few times each month to see how the other is doing, how you can help each other, and who is sticking to the previous practices as well as the new one! Help one another along the way!

Even though being frugal can get tiring and make you feel burnt out, there is hope! Take a short break, implement some visuals, and talk to friends. By embracing your season of life and frugality, you can revamp your motivation and breathe new life into your motivation to be frugal!
